Unit 7 Introduction

LECTURE: Introduction to Unit 7 and the end of the course. player (cc searchable) | mp4 | Windows Media (cc) | Transcript

In these final days one last important concept is introduced--meter. You will be asked to identify simple and compound meters. The .cnx article Meter in Music http://cnx.org/content/m12405/latest/ introduces additional concepts (such as time signatures) that would need to understood by music majors. For this course, however, just the distinction between simple and compound meters are required. Adding to your knowledge of textures, you will be required to identify texts and simple or compound meters. The Practice Quiz on Textures and Meter should help you with this. This practice quiz is not graded, but Test 5 is graded.

In your final composition, a sound track for a moive clip, you will be using all the skills you have learned in the course. IMPORTANT keep a record of every file you download from creative committees on the web. If you adopt this habit, you will not have to spent many frustrating minutes trying to find the references to files you use in your composition.

Be creative in your final composition! I have allowed enough time in this portion of the course for you to really explore new ideas. You should spend at least 15 hours on the project. Some students spend 20 to 30 hours.

Remember that effects are not sound clips (sometimes called sound effects, but let's refer to those as sound files). Be sure to add an effect to at least one of your tracks. You can use reverberation, for instance.

Consider how to place the sounds in musical space with panning. Try composing some materials yourself. Don't settle for your first idea, try to improve your work.

Carefully observe all aspects of the project description. You will find the link to the final project on the course home page.

Try to use the .avi files with your video software. If you are unable to do this then Mac users should use the .mp4 files and PC users will use .wvm files.
