These next days we conclude our reading of the article on “Yesterday” by McIntyre. The article provides some fascinating insights to the creation of the song. Here are highlights that I noticed in the article:
Although the inspiration for the song was given in a dream, the song was composed over several months.
The lyrics were added after the melody and harmonies were set.
Composition or changes in the song continued even during the recording session.
Today we are removed from the initial airing of the song on radio and miss the shock of having string instruments play in a Rock music genre. “Yesterday,” however, was the first popular song in its genre to use “classical” or symphonic instruments. “Imagine” by John Lennon was composed many years later and it (as well as other popular songs) used string instruments such as violin as well. Today it is quite common for popular songs to mix instrumentation and styles. It was less so in the 1960s. Rock bands at that time features electric guitars and drum sets, and sometimes keyboards—never string instruments such as violin and cello.
In this unit you will further refine your skills with Audacity and learn to use new effects. Be sure to take notes on what you learn in the video lectures.
