Do I need to read music to take the course?
No, the course is designed for a student with no background in music. Naturally someone with experience in music may pick up certain concepts quicker, but this course does not teach music notation.
Do I have to be a geek to take the course?
If you mean by “geek” someone with exceptional technical expertise, the answer is no. However, I do expect that all students enrolled in the course will have some basic competencies with computers and the Internet. Please see “Keys to Success”
Why can’t I only use my favorite music software. Why do I have to use Aria Maestosa and Reaper?
The software has been carefully selected so that all students, regardless of computer platform (PC, Mac, Linux), can be instructed similarly. The software is also selected for its stability and pedagogical merit. I don’t have the time to produce multiple training videos, materials, and to troubleshoot the different software available on the market today.
In addition, the software is selected to minimize expense. I know that education is expensive, so I am holding down the costs for you!
Is it possible for me to use my favorite music software in
the course?
Absolutely. Toward the end of the course I indicate when you are free to develop MIDI files and other materials with different software. Also, upon my approval, I will allow you to use other software earlier in the course provided you are completing the same assignments. Please be aware, however, that I will not provide technical support for software not designated for assignments in the course.
Is it true that you can play bassoon fast enough to perform "Flight of the Bumblee?"
Yes, here is my YouTube video (1 min. 36 sec.)
