This is a video that will help you with setting the
tempo, determining the tempo for the text that you will use in
your Composition 4. Now it is very important that you do this
first because this will save you a lot of extra work.
So what I am doing in this video is providing you with two
examples of some poetry or text that I am going to set to a
tempo. I am going to show you how to determine that tempo.
First I have here “Men in Black.”
Here come the men in black
It's the MiB's, uh, here come's the MiB's
So what I am doing here is using bold for the words that are
stressed, for the words that are on a beat.
Here come the men in black
It's the MiB's, uh, here come's the MiB's
You can see that I am keeping a steady tempo, emphasizing
certain words that occur in that tempo.
So the question is, “What metronome marking will be suited for
us?”
You can figure this out in Audacity. Go to Generate, Click
Track . Here we have options for the tempo or beats per
minute. Let me put in 60 here. Let’s have it generate it. You
can see the click track is here. Let’s play it.
Let me try speaking with the click track.
Here come the men in black
It's the MiB's, uh, here come's the MiB's

OK. That works, but it is a little bit too slow for me.
Am going to X this out. Let’s generate another click track.
Instead of 60 let’s try 80. Click OK here. Let’s give this one
a try.
Here come the men in black
It's the MiB's, uh, here come's the MiB's
OK, well that sounds much better. That will be the tempo I
want to do for this one. Let’s do another example here.
Here is a section from “The Message.”
It's like a jungle sometimes it makes me wonder
How I keep from going under
(text from:
http://www.lyricsfreak.com/g/grandmaster+flash/the+message_20062225.html)
Let me underline those words—bold those words that need
emphasis.
It's like a jungle sometimes it makes me wonder
How I keep from going under
OK, so let’s see if that 80 is a good tempo for me. Let’s see
if that works.
It's like a jungle sometimes it makes me wonder
How I keep from going under
Well, that seems pretty good. I wonder if I can do it a little
bit faster. Click that out. Generate a click track…I wonder if
I tried 100. OK. Let’s see how well that works.
It's like a jungle sometimes it makes me wonder
How I keep from going under
Well that is pretty fast! I wonder how Grandmaster Flash; I
wonder what his tempo was.

Well, I think that he actually does it around 100. That’s why
he is the Grandmaster and I am not, because I would really
need to practice it to get it up to that tempo.
But you can see that now I have established the tempo—let’s
say I establish 90, a little under 100—now I know the tempo
that I will create my rhythmic background for in my
composition and the tempo that I will aim for when I put the
text to the music.
