In this course we will use .ogg files for sharing. These files are compressed and therefore smaller than .wav or .aiff files. The quality of .ogg files is more than adequate for our purposes in the course.
Saving .ogg files
When your project is complete in Audacity go to File-->Export. Choose ogg from the drop down window.
Also save your work in Audacity by File-->Save (or save as).
Only send the .ogg file to your group or Dr. Ewell.
Opening .ogg files
Launch Audacity and open the file. Also VLC player will be able to play the files.
What about .mp3 files?
.ogg files are the public domain equivalent of mp3 files. Audacity can save mp3 files, but because mp3 files are still under proprietary control they are not packaged with the program. You can, however, add the encoding software to Audacity which is called "LAME."
If you are intending to record and/or mix down your recordings in, or convert other recorded material to, MP3 format, you will need to install an MP3 encoder. A suitable encoder is LAME, which is available free of charge.
